Richard Watkinson & Partners Pronounce Newark's Former Registry Office 'For Sale'

30/11/2015 by Kirsty Keeton

FORMER REGISTRY OFFICE NOW PRONOUNCED ‘FOR SALE’

THE ICONIC Grade II listed Newark Municipal Offices, previously used as a registry and county offices, is being offered to market by leading estate agent, Richard Watkinson & Partners.

The 12,500 sq ft building, located at Baldertongate in the centre of the Nottinghamshire market town, started life as a home for Dr Bernard Wilson, Vicar of Newark, in the 18th century. The property has an asking price of £695,000 with the potential for residential or commercial use (subject to planning permission).

The impressive Georgian building is spread across three floors, including a spacious useable attic space and sits in 0.8 of an acre of land with a 28-space car park and large landscaped garden to the rear. The property is owned by Newark and Sherwood District Council which formally leased it to Nottinghamshire County Council  as the Registry Office  and office space.

Kirsty Keeton, director at Richard Watkinson & Partners, said: “This is a unique opportunity to purchase a part of the town’s history. It is currently being used as offices, but there is the potential for a residential and or commercial conversion, subject to gaining planning consent, due to the central location in the town and ample car parking facilities on a site of just less than an acre.

It would also be ideal for a business looking to relocate and maintain a town centre office presence, with ample car parking facilities, this combination is quite rare in the town,” added Kirsty.

“A number of the  rooms are particularly impressive, with an abundance of period features, including marble fireplaces, high ceilings and internal panelling throughout plus some rooms have a dual or triple aspect, providing pleasant views over the grounds which have a number of attractive mature trees, or towards the town.

“This iconic property has charm is unique and has an interesting history.  It’s an unusual property that has a long and prominent history in the area. In terms of residential use, as it has been used for conducting marriages it means that couples who have been married at the registry office now have the chance to live where they were wed. It’s an incredible opportunity and certainly not one I see every day, and we’re very excited to be marketing the property,” added Kirsty.

The building currently has planning consent for office use, but a buyer could potentially seek change of use permission for residential or quasi commercial conversion.
Richard Watkinson & Partners has been operating in the East Midlands for 25 years and has built a strong commercial property base – having recently relocated the Advertiser Media Group to its new home at Fernwood Business Park.
